Regent Gardens Kirkintilloch
Client: East Dunbartonshire Council
Overview: Environmental improvements including street furniture, drainage channels and soft landscaping
Timing: April - July 2009
Contract Value: £143,000
Regent Gardens is a small park in the town centre of Kirkintilloch that had been neglected for some time. We worked on a project that aimed to redevelop the site and encourage the local community to make full use of the improved facilities.
The project involved the creation of stepped terraces using whinstone step units, with a contrasting sandstone paving infill. New uplighters and power point pop-ups were installed at various points throughout the paving.
A new field drain was installed along the edge of the bottom terrace, with lighting and power-system ducting being drained into it. A large sump was created at the end of the drain to allow the surface water to soak away.
The works also included directional warning paving at the top of the terraced area. New bollards were installed to prevent the over-run of vehicles.
Trees and shrubs were planted in different sections of the terraces, with an existing cherry tree being retained and existing grass areas being reinstated with turf.
As the site was relatively small and had only one access point, planning was paramount to the success of the project. The contract was completed in 12 weeks, well within the allotted 16 weeks – and we were delighted to be commended by the architect for the quality of our work.
