St Andrews
Client: Fife Council
Overview: Caithness slabbing, street lighting and road resurfacing
Timing: July 2007 - May 2008
Contract Value: £1.2 million
We were awarded the contract to redevelop the streetscape within the conservation area of St Andrews. The project involved the total reconstruction of footpaths and carriageways to three main streets within the town centre.
The existing footpaths were excavated to a depth of 400mm and reconstructed using 50/65mm-thick natural Caithness stone. The existing whin kerbs and granite setts were lifted, cleaned and relaid to form wider footpaths and parking areas. The existing road carriageways were either excavated to a depth of 550mm and rebuilt to current road construction standards, or planed off and resurfaced.
The ancillary work undertaken during the above operations included the renewal and replacement of road drainage, and replacement of service covers in the footpath (with custom-made recessed covers incorporating Caithness stone).
Part of the main works was the complete renewal of the existing street lighting network. Ducting and cabling were installed during footpath construction with the lamp columns, traffic signs and pedestrian-crossing equipment erected as the work proceeded.
The system was further enhanced by the inclusion of underground power points, allowing Christmas lights to be hung on the existing tree avenue in South Street.
The client advised in March that additional funding had become available to upgrade two further footpath locations. This work was incorporated into the main works with the understanding that there would be no additional preliminaries or management costs and the original contract period could be extended.
The client expressed satisfaction throughout the duration of the contract. We were commended specifically on the high quality of finished work, and the way in which pedestrian and traffic management was handled in the very busy narrow streets. This was made possible through ongoing liaison with shop owners and residents.
